Sir Wilfrid Laurier, addressing 10,000 persons at Alberta, said —"You are all freetraders; I am also a freetrader, and Fox, Gladstone, Bright and Cobden arc my models; but a young country cannot adopt freetrade the same as England, which derives revenue from the luxuries of the leisured classes. It is impossible to tax new settlers. The bulk of our finance must at present be raised from Customs duties." He promised a revision of the Canadian tarifl and expected that reciprocal trade between Canada and the United States would speedily be established. The United States was knocking at Canada's door, hut until now "Washington had made no fair proposal.
LONDON, August 13. The "Times' " Toronto correspondent, says that the western farmers who demand a lower tariff are overwhelmingly favourable to Empire preference, and denies the likelihood of a material reduction of duties.
