NEW MONTHLY JOURNAL. "We have received from the Editor of Agricultural Department's Publication Section a copy of the first number of tho monthly journal, which, is to take the place of the Annual Report that had been published for some years past. This first number is a neatly got up well printed pamphlet of between 70 and 80 pages, with photo illustrations. The Hon. T. Mackenzie supplies a preface setting forth the objects of the journal, and the reason for adopting monthly instead of annual issues, which is to get information available placed before agriculturists as promptly as possible. The principal article in this number is a long paper by Mr W. E. Gwillim, dairy instructor, giving the information required by persons thinking of establishing dairy , factories, butter or cheese, the points to be inquired into, how to form a company, points in management, choice of sites, planning a factory, plant required, and last but not least, some catalogue prices of the principal items of the plant. First _ place, however (after some official lists) is given to an illustrated paper by Mr A. H. Cockavne, biologist, on the effect of burn inntussock country, the Mackenzie plain being one of the regions examined. This is followed by a short account by Mr Alex. Macphersson, Fields Instructor, on depletion of the native pastures in the Mackenzie plain, and runs in Central Otago, and the exneriments in re-grassing that he has initiated, on Sawdon, Haldon and Simon's Pass runs. Mr Mrscpherson also supplies a paper on solid straw Tuscan wheat, with
