Hockey Notes.

Avcc.a held a practice on Russol Square on Thursday afternoon and a good attendance of members was present. The spectators gave very little trouble to the referees on Thursday in regard to encroaching en the playing grounds, and if at futuie games they siiow the same consideration, they will earn the 'jtratitude of both referees and players alike. Timaru Juniors could only muster five men on Tliursdav to travel to '!,-- muka. and consequently had to forfeit the game. VYahnnte also failed to keep their first engagement in the fixtures and no doubt thy will be dealt with by the management committee. A detachment of the St. John Ambulance attended the hockey matches on the Park on Thursday, but happily their services were only called for one*, although a more serious accidenf did oeet:r. but the '-ufr rer wis huvWc-1 at_ once to the Hospital as the injury was a fresh h-oak in th- wrht of a player. wlrcb had only recently mended. A d-tachmoot of rh--. Nursing Sisters was also in attendance.

Tho eompitition matches opcn.d on Thursday in Timaru, and a large attendance of the public wit:i: ssed t-ha vaiious games. in the .Men's Senior games u aimate did not- put m an appearance and so the game went to St. Mary's by default, Temuka div..' with Geraldino. and i'e Rangi Ivat Timaru. In the Junior games Timari! forfeited to Temuka, and Geraldine beat St. Mary's in the Ladies' Senior game Timaru easily defeated Pioneer (CJeraldine), and in the Junior Timaru beat Ruahine (Temuka).

in the Ladies' Senior game Timaru Jmd rather an easy victory, although Jl they had played more carefully thev coukl have piled up a bijrger 'score. Misses McWhirter (?) X. Quick and A. Howens played solid forward games, while Misses Hunt and Hodges plaved very safe games in the back division. Miss 0. Bradley (goal) did not get a chance to show her capabilities in that position. For Pioneer Miss L. McKav did a lot of work on the three-quarter the passing of the homo forwards out-manoeuvred the visiting backs. J. McKay, R. and E. Bate" and O. Campbell also did good service for their side. Miss Turner, goalkeeper for Pioneer gave a good exhibition, but it was impossible for to stop all the shots at goal, but- lieverthe less she helped to keep down the score considerablv.

In the Junior match. Geraldme v. St. Mary's, the latter team played a. good game, and though thev plaved with a man short after the first five minutes, they gave Gevaldino the worst of the deal. The only thing that lost St. Mary's the match was their over-eager-ness when they got in the circle. Geraldme had the best of the first spell, Sutherland, Turner and Saunders doing the major part of the work, while Anderson at three-quarters was prettv .suae. In the second spell St. Mary's played a much improved wi-me Mcßeath, Vardley and Evans grttii,,, m some good passing, while Williams in the back division plaved a -safe game. L. Wood. St. Marv's goalkeeuer played a- good game, clearing the circle in fine style, and using his feeb and stick to advantage.

No. 1 Park ground proved a very fast ground indeed on Thursday, the players being able to hit from one end to the other very easily. This no doubt contributed largely to the defeat of Tiniaru at the hands of Te Rangi. The ground seemed to suit the rl'eety Te R::ngi forwards and enabled them to make use of their speed, the evenings of the ground also allowed the three c-iarcers to •'speculate'' more than usual, and Jaeombs. playing right, three-quarters, got in some verv useful flying hits. Mason and Williams both played good games, and were ably assisted by Whitley and Rndcliffo. " Another factor that pave-Te Rangi an advantage over Timnni was the wav in which their forwards kept up to' the Tiniaru three-quarter line, they generally had at last three ready ' to rush down on the Tiniaru goal as soon as

the ball was Kit to thorn. They made Lite game open and got in .some good passing, ;md ns nil hockey players It no w, or should know, that the passing game invariably wins, Timarti have, the making of a really good team and should give a. hotter account of themselves as tlie competition goes on, but one fault that was very noticeable or Thursday ints tho way'in -which their players, forwards mostly, got out of their places. They crowded too much in the centre, of tho field, and consequently when the halves or three-quar-ters sent the Kali to the line there was nobody there to take it on and m tins wa.v they lost a lot of ground. Thomas (Timaru) played a Rood gam© and missed scoring twice, once bv a misjudged hit, arid on another ocasion by over-m'H"'"rr *'■„ l.,i] n../r Stevenson and Rowkott also' played "ell. the former gettbie- bi some v <-•*■ good drives and saving Timaru time after time.
