HUNTING.

THE LEVELS MEET. Last Thursday was a very eventful dav in the 1 ( J10 season. The meet was at Mr C. X. Urboll's homestead at the Levels, at 11 a.m. Xeus having sjiread that the hounds belonging, to the Waimate District Hunt would hunt in the. morning and the South Canterbury pack in the afternoon, attracted a big field., amongst whom were Miss Boag. from Christehureh. Miss Rattray, trom Waimate. and ten members of the Waimate District Hunt. Considering hunting in Timaru from Waimate necessitates being away from home for practically three days, it was- considered very sporting of the Waimate Hunt to be so well represented, and Miss Boag and Miss Rattray were to be congratulated on being prominent in the first flight throughout the day. There were ys followers, a big majority of whom were straightgoers. Of the local horses Mr W~. !'. Stericker's Musk was perhaps never seen in better form, and Mr E. (.'. Kerr's Commander, ridden by Mr i. Caple. jumped faultlessly all day. The weather was all that could be desired, and so was the going and the country hunted over, some of the best in the district. Unfortunately scent was bad and very catchy in the morning, and until late in the afternoon,' when there was a great improvement. The. time honoured welcome at tile homestead by Mrs Orbell and her daughters was extended to about 300, who sat down to iunch and returned later for aiternoon tea. and the hospitality was very much appreciated, and went a 1' ug wav towards crowning the enjoyment of the day's sport. An even pack of eight couple of the Waimate hounds very soon found a hare in Mr ■lolin Cook's orchard, and rattled ho i' backwards and forwards with " a great deal of Flash •■ to such an extent- that /Si:- was unable to make' her escape into open country, and v—:s conseouemlv verv soon killed. Mr J. li. HwwWr. Master of the Waimate District Hunt, showed very good sport with his hounds ■ during the. morning, several short runs resulting, the almost entire absence of scent preventing a run of any distance being recorded. The "Waimate huntsman. T. Hobbs, and the whip. W. Wilson, had their hounds under control, and let no obstacle prevent- them front being always in touch with. them. At the luncheon interval Mr A. S. Ehvort.hy in a few words, expressed his pleasure at seeing so many representatives of the Waimate Hunt present, and congrvtulated them on the good sport their hounds had shown during the morning with very little scent to help them, and on having secured bold riders in their huntsman and whip, who had the interests of the snort at heart. Speaking on behalf of the Waimate Hunt, Mr J. B. Bowker complimented the South Canterbury Hunt on the exceedingly generous manner in which it had always treated visitors from other districts, and also in bavinc- Mr A. S. El worthy at the bead of affairs. By having so pwid. a Master, he said, the Hunt would long maintain its ronn ration of being the best snorting Hunt in the Dominion. He honed, in fact be was suit, that thev would hare a good run that dav. and that the Hunt would always be as

prosperous ;is at present. After lum;h I the South Canterbury puck hunted j several hares lor short distances on < Mr C. N. Urbell's property, hut eouid : not own to a line witii confidence- lor ■ any length of tune. Disappointment j was felt by members of the local Hunt j that vistors from Waimate were to lie ' rewarded with such indifferent sport, i At halfpast three, however, a strong I hare found in some turnips near the ; homestead gave an excellent run.
