The French submarine Pluviose sank in the Channel and the crow were drowned through coining into collision with the South-Eastern Railway Company's steamer Pas de Calais. It was fine and clear at the time of the disaster and the submarine was not seen after the collision. Twentythree men were drowned. Five French torpedo boats have commenced dragging operations. The Pas do Calais carried 280 passengers. Her bows were badly damaged and she was obliged to return to Calais. DETAILS OF THE DISASTER. LONDON, Mav 27.
The submarine Pluviouse was rising from a dive when she struck the stea- . mer. She floated ten minutes, with nine feet of the bows above water. A boat was launched and an officer boarded her and knocked on the deck plates, but received no reply. The Pluviouse then sank. There were indications that the miptha reservoir had burst, as the spirit was seen bubbling and eddying to the surface. Received 10.40 p.m., Hay 27th. PERISHED INSTANTLY. : Tiie diver found the Pluviose badly holed aft and full of water. He knocked at the bow compartment, but there was no response. Experts consider that the crew perished instantly. A MISSING BARQUE. \ SYDNEY, May 27. I All hope has been abandoned of the ; barque Prineesse Mary, which left .Sydney for Smoky Bay in February, and has not since been reported. j
BARQUE ASHORE. LOSS OF LIFE. Received 9.45 p.m.. May 27th. The barque Swauhilda from Cardiff for Antofagasta, is a&horo on Station Island, Argentina. Fifteen were saved, the rest being drowned, includ- ' ing the captain and his wife. ]
