Per Press Association. ALLEGED SERIOUS ASSAULT. WELLINGTON, Dec. 3. The police to-day received information of an assault on a woman which' occurred on Tuesday, the result being the arrest of a man named David Bates. It is alleged that Bates attacked Mrs Sheehan with a table knife inflicting two wounds in one of her thighs, also causing bruises in several parts of her body and blackening her eyes. The knife is said to have been broken in the fray. Mrs Sheehan is now m the hospital. Another woman who intervened, is said to have beon also struck severe blows. HOTELKEEPER FINED. ASHBURTON, Dec. 3. James Lorgelly, hotelkeeper of Methven, in the Selwyn licensing district, was fined £lO on a charge of soliciting an order for liquor on the Ashburton racecourse. The case arose out of the sly-grog selling case heard a fortnight ago, when Lorgelly gave evidence which led to his own conviction yesterday. DUNEDIN NEWS. - DUNEDIN, Dec. 3. Ihe lrades and Labour Council have received a letter from Mj- Lloyd George, thanking them for their message of encouragement with reference to the Budget proposals. Mr Will Crooks has inspected the Mosgiel Woollen Factory, which he says is_ the finest of its kind seen during his travels. At a meeting of tho Professoral Board of Otago University, to-day, it was decided to nominate Henry Havelock Cornish, 8.A., of Kaitangata, as the Otago candidate for the Rhodes scholarship.
