ROWING NOTES.

(By Sliding Seat.)

During the hitter part of last week the men experienced weather which kept all crews from training. Since the change every crew has been out very consistently. A great, improvement has taken place, especially in tho new men. I have not. seen all the crews'at work, but from what i can learn and have seen there is not much to cloose between any of them. Nicholls has a very good crew, and all tho men seem to get together at tho catch. Archer has a light, wiry crew,-who are doing very good work. Ma.bcn has been working his crew very solid this week. I look to him to come somewhere near at the finish. Duff trains in the dark so very little can be seen of him, but he is putting any amount of work into his crew and they should be the fittest on the day of the race. The three morning crews are training very well. All the members of these crews should remember that if they do not turn up this other men cannot get a row. Once an appointment is made it is the duty of.every member to keep it, otherwise lie is just as well out of the crew.

The clinker four purchased by the club has been in use all the week, the youth's crew going out every night. The senior crew have been out twice so far but do not seem very comfortable in her. The oars are too long in board. The buttons have been put on for a longer out-rigger. If this is the case new oars wiTl have to be bought. The youths seem to bo very much at home in tho new clinker, and when they liave had a little more coaching they should give a good account of themselves. The race for the trial fours takes place next week. The first heat starts on Monday, at - 6.15 p.m. The crews competing aro stroked by J". Norrie, H. Rollinson, and J. Nicholls. On Tuesday there will bo two heats, one at 5.30, and the other at 6.15. The first heat will be between Maben's and Archer's crews, to be followed by Duff and Malthus. All members are requested to be at the shed in time so that the boats may leave the skids at the appointed time, not fifteen or thirty minutes after. The race committee should fine .any member or crew who is late. If this is not enforced tho club will be having the same old cry—"Late as usual."

Tho secretary of the club, acting under instructions of the committee, has asked me not to publish men's names in the future, but jusj; to refer to them as to their number in the lioat. A very good suggestion, which I will act upon, as I know, it hurts some men's feelings when they see their name in print.

The regatta clnb are putting on two rowing races for members of the Rowing Club. These races are under the control of the Rowing Clnb, and only members can compete. It behoves members to enter so that a first-class entry can be. made. The races will all bo rowed on one day. The two races are- for junior and senior members of the club, which, should bring out some very even crews. A ladies' race has also been put on the programme, and like the two club races, will bo for members of the Timaru Rowing Club. An entry sheet was placed on the notice board last week, and so far eight entries havo been received. This should be very gratifying Jfcr the Regatta Committee. The race, heats only, will be rowed on Regatta Day, and the semi-finals and final on the following evenings. . In mv notes last week I said that the single sculler was a private boat, I havo heard since that the club purchased the boat, with the idea of the coaches using it while coaching the crews for regattas. _
