SCENE IN THE SENATE.
MUST NOT QUOTE NEW ZEALAND
A heated scene between Senator Stewart (Q) and the President (Sir Albert Gould) occurred in the. Federal Senate the- other day. The debato on. the High Commissioner Bill was proceeding, and Senator Stewart quoted at length from the speech by Mr. Watt, Treasurer of Victoria, on the question.of land taxation. lie went on to allude to land legislation in New Zealand, referred to by Mr. Watt.
The- President (Sir Albert Gould.— You cannot quote New Zealand legislation.
Senator Stewart. —I say, Mr. President, that it has a bearing on the legislation in Australia.
The President. —The High Commissioner has nothing whatever to do with New Zealand. Senator Stewart. —I contend that it lias, because The President. — The lion, member must obey my ruling. Mr. Stewart (hotly).—lfc is eminently unfair There were several other exchanges, and Senators urged Mr. Stewart to "withdraw." / Senator Stewart. —I intend to move that the President's ruling be disagreed with. The Treasurer of Victoria was permitted to give facts with regard to New Zealand when moving his land measure. I want to give those facts
The President. —If the lion, member disagrees with my ruling, lie must, put his motion in writing. Senator Stewart then moved that the President';; ruling be disagreed with, in bo far as lie had ruled that no reference, could bo made to tha progress of Jand settlement in New Zealand under the land tax regime, such legislation being vital to the. subject under discussion.
On the motion of Senator Findlr-v (V). it was agreed, by 22 votes to 3,
