"HEART OF THE ARCTIC"

LIEUTEX A N'T SHACK I.ETOX \S BOOK. Lieutenant. Shackleton's story of hi* great attempt to reach the South Pole lias been named "The Heart of the Arctic." The search for a suitable title has not been easy. The picturesque title selected is considered by Mr. Jleincniann, the publisher, to represent as nearly as possible the scope of the book and the result of the expedition. Although Lciutcnant Sliackletou did not actually reach the South Pole he got at the heart of the region in which it is situated, and everyone now accepts his theory that the Pole is in the centre of the great plateau over which he travelled. ."The Heart of the Arctic" will be published early in November in two volumes, each of 300 to 400 pages, and will consist of 250,000 to 300,000 words It will bo iljystrated with over 300 pictures and photographs, including a dozen or more colour plates after paintings by Mr. Marston, the artist of the expedition. Editions have been already arranged for in seven languages, with the probability of publication in four more. The book will bo publishel simultaneously, complete with all maps and illustrations, in London (English), NewYork (English), Paris (French), Berlin (German), Milan (Italian), Buda-Pesth (Hungarian), Stockholm (Scandinavian), Helsingfors (Finnish). Mr. Heinemann considers the chapters in which Lieutenant Shackleton tells the story of his dash for the South Pole so fascinating and full of the simple spirit of adventure that he believes they will eventually become a standard book for boys. The whole hook touches a higher livel of literary effort than the average record of exploration.
