ST. JOHN'S AMBULANCE.

ANNUAL MEETING. The first annual meeting of the Tiniaru Division of the St. John Ambulance Brigade was held last Tuesday evening, when there was a largo attendance of members. Superintendent A. G. Foster occupied tho chair, and in his opening remarks he pointed out the excellent progress the division had made since its inception about ten months ago, when the division started with a membership of 2S, the present strength being 42, with several more to sign on. He emphasised the fact that a great deal of the success was duo to their Hon. Surgeon, Dr G. E. Gabites, who had given them a splendid training in first aid work as well as the benefit of sound advice in other matters. For tho way the ladies of Timaru had assisted them in their collection and also in making arm bands, ho could not give enough praise, he also thanked the officers and privates of the division for the way they had assisted him to carry out his duty to the public of Timaru/ as well as tho splendid attendance they had given at practice and parades. One difficulty had presented itself, and tha twas the want of a suitable room to practice in. Tliis would have to be surmounted during tho coming year. Tho balance-sheet showed a credit of £7B 8s sd, but there were accounts to come in totalling £55 for material just received from London. In the courso of a week or two all the First Aid Depots in and around the town would be fully equipped. Owing to the increase in membership more officers had to bo appointed and a ballot was taken with the following result: —First Officer, J. Dunnill, promoted from Sergeant, unopposed; Corporal Mintrom, promoted to Sergeant, and Privates W. Harris, T. Teape and Griffiths promoted to Corporals. Privates Shelly, Wade and Reid were added to the " Standing Committee. H. Archer re-elected Secretary, with S. Simpson Assistant-Secretary. District Superintendent Hughson was present at the meeting and complimented the division on the excellent progress made and the prompt manner in which members turned out in cases of accident or illness. He also complimented tho division on having secured tho first and second prizes in the recent first aid competitions held at the Military Carnival, having beaten a squad that held a chamnion shield won at tho N.Z.
