The death is. also announced of Mr John Johnston, Governor of Minnesota. The latter's death is a heavy blow to the democrats. MR DAVID CRAIG. Per Press Association. AUCKLAND. Sept. 24. Tho death occurred to-day of Mr David Craig, formerly general manager, for Sew Zea!and-of the -New;Zealand Insurance Co. Mr Craig; had reached the allotted snail of life. He entered tho service of the New Zealand Insurance Co. in 1867. Promotion came rapidly his way chietty on account of his exceptional business, abihties. For a considerable time he acted as manager of tUe company at Christchurch, and appreciation or his valuable services during that period is recorded. CHRISTCHURCH, Sept. 24A distressing accident attended with fatal results occurred at Messrs Bowron's tannery at Woolston this morning. 'An employee named Frederick Jensen, 24 years of age, went up a ladder to put some belting on a wheel, when he was caught in the shafting and whirled round ,being picked up uncon-y-ions with terrible injuries to his head. He was taken to the hospitaliu practically moribund condition, and although •'verything possible was done for him he died about two hours' after adnuV fcion. WOMEN COMMIT SUICIDE. DUNEDIN, Sept. 24. Mrs Bruce, wife of Mr Henry Bruce, a painter, residing in Walker Avenue, was found by her husband last evening suffering severe pains. In reply to questions she said that she had put some match heads in water and then drank the solution. Medical aid was secured and the women was removed to the hosnital, where she died tonight. She" was 29 years old and had four children. So far as is known deceased had no domestic trouble. Mrs Hughes, a widow, aged 08 years, residing in South Dunedm, was found drowned in the bath at l«>r msidenco about 5.30 n.m. to-d:.y. Her husband died in Aoril last and it is stated that ehe had been despondent since then.
