SOCIAL ATIORTON.

A social took place in the Orion Schoolroom on Friday evening last, to raise funds for the school prizes, and it Was a great success both socially and llliancially. The arrangements were in the hands of a committee, of young ladies, u-lui spared nr> pains to provide entertainment for those present. The lirst item on the programme was the •singing „f the Xew Zealand National hymn. "God defend New Zealand."' hya company consisting of blisses Jlrookiand (3). Todd, Gedye. and Messrs. Stonycr. Abbott, Snell, anil Cain, the accompaniments, being played by Mrs Cain. The singers were posed in a pretty tableau, the ladies v earing red, white and blue decorations, on white dresses, the stage was due-united with cabbage trees and foliage, and in front sat a little girl, Hazel Shaw, in Maori costume. Dancing was then commenced and kept up with great spirit for the greater part of the evening. Mr Taylor kindly acting as M.C. Kxccllent music was provided gratuitously by Miss Park (piano) and Mr Donnithorne (violin). A very pleasing feature of the evening was some Highland dancing in costume by the Misses Scott and Myra Shaw, of Winchester: to bagpipe music by Mr Scott. Later in the evening a. vi ry amusing dialogue, •'•Scene in a drawing room," was contributed by a company of yoiing people-and was much appreciated. Songs were Mijig by Miss Gedye, Mr Stonycr, and Mrs. G. Shaw gave a recitation. All these were highly appreciated. Tlie accompaniments wore nlayed by Mrs Cain and Miss M. Hrookhind. Shortly after, eleven o'clock supper was ' dispensed,and the cateriug, which was in tho" hands of Mr McLean, of Toinuka, was all that could be desired. After supper dancing was resumed, and at the close votes of thanks were proposed by Messrs, Taylor and Cain respectively, to the musicians, the MX', and all who helped U i make the, social ii ' success, and-to Mrs. Shaw who kindly lent her piano for the occasion.
