. Tiiis alteruoon a lire was discovered in" -si house .Sutherland road, Marantti, owned by Mr Wallace, and (>:■- eiipiedbv Mr Grosvenor. The brigade promptly responded to t!u> summons, but 011 arrival it was fomul that owing to a lac-k of water, its services were of little use. A strong southerly wind was blowing, and the flames spread rapidly to the .adjoining house, occupied by Mr Goodwin and owned b.v Mr Alexander Aliliignn. This house, idso wa« totally" destroyed. A third house, also owiied by Mr Milium, and in the oeeimation of Mr JJ.- AlcTvinnnn, was likewise,, destroyed. The Haines were blow.n on t«: a fourth- cottage. occupied' by Mr Wiliiiims and some other youngmen-as. a bachelors' establishment.. The oivnOr of it -is Mrs Walker. This huilding 'was destroyed, and a like fate befell • a fifth house owned by Mr ]?obnrfc Martin, and occupied hy Mr F. Edmonds. The fuuriture and effects iii Mr Grosvenor s house were all burnt, but from the others I n fair amount was salvage:!.
