Per Press Association. NEW PLYMOUTH, July 16. Mr Smyth, representing the Canterbuy sviKticate which iias purchased Cadmali and Co's. interest in the Parapara and New Plymouth iron sand leases, waited on the Harbour Board this morning, asking for the extension of the leases of the Board's reserves. The Public Trustee wrote to the effect that .the syndicate intended sending to America and England to interest capitalists, and endeavour to form a large company to -establish the industry. Six months' extension of time was granted.-
WELLINGTON, July IG. Mr W. A. Veitch, president of the Amalgamated Society of .Railway Servants', has challenged Mr Geo. Brown, president of the Knginemeii and Eiremen's Association to debate the question, "Is it desirable arid in the interests of the locomotive men of New Zealand to form themselves into an association separate from the A.S.R.S." Mr Veitch wishes to meet Mr Brown at Auckland, Wellington, Christeliureh, Dnnedin and Invercargill, and would.be glad to add other places.
ASHBURTON, July 16. At the Magistrate's Court to-day Agnes Crosby claimed £SO damages from William and Jane McClurg, for injuries sustained through being thrown out of a gig owine to her pony takino- fright at defendant's motor ear. Judgment was given for plaintiff for £3O.
DUNEDIN, July 16. The degrees and diplomas gained by students, at Otago /University were conferred to-day. The iron. C. C. Bo wen, who presided, expressed the opinion that in future all Colleges would be separate Universities, though he did not expect the change would <ake place for a. few generations. Speeches were also delivered by Mr S. Solomon, K.C., Professor Park, Mr Joynt, and Dr. Johnson.
