GERALDINE NOTES.

The recent storm has disappeared entirely, the weather clearing to a fiue day yesterday. The hotels will close to-night here. Great competition is looked for in thecontest for the last drink before nolicense comes into force. One of the auctioneers here is sel'ing off a comprehensive assortment of wet stuff this afternoon, in lots to suit purchasers: that is, any lot of five gallons or more. Mr Nosworthy, M.P., was in Geraldine • yesterday, arranging with Mr Flatman for a deputation to meet the Hon. Jas. Millar on the question of the stoppage of the expresses at Orari. From to-morrow a letter mail will be thrown off at Orari for Geraldine. It is hoped that this action is only a stepping stone to the ultimate stoppage of the train. The deputation will meet Mr Miliar at Orari.
A very sudden death occurred in the Timaru hospital yesterday. Mr Wm. Baxter, of Geraldine, who i.ar been engaged in the chemistry inisii. for some years, was taken suddenly :1" on Saturday night, and his medica 1 adviser ordered his removal to the hospital. The patient was operated upon, but slight hopes of his recovery were entertained, and ~».e passed away at mid-day yesterday. Great n-gret i felt here," as Mr Baxter has been ':i most popular and kindly gentleman.
