SI lII' IN DISTRESS. STRUCK 15Y A TIDAL WAVE. Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, June 29. The full-rigged ship Leicester Castle was lowed into iiort at midnight in a disabled condition. She left Monte Video on April 12lh, ballasted and lon ad for New South W'ak's. Eight trays later, in a. high breeze, she was suddenly overturned by a tidal wave, estimated to be 12(1 feet high, and 'thrown on her beam ends. It was fully ten minutes before the vessel righted 'again. The wave was attributed to seismic action. At the end of April the vessel experienced heavy gales and mountainous seas. Considerable damage was done to the spars, sails, and rigging. June'l2th to .June' JGtli also was a- period of storm. The. i'ore-topgillant mast was carried away, bringing down the topmast head and yards. The ship was labouring, so much that it was unsafe for the nvw to •tliempt to clear the wreckage. A steamer was .sighted, and rockets displayed for assistance, 'nit they were not seen. The maintopgallant mast was lost. The weather, moderating, the wreckage was cleared away, and the vessel, going before the wind, succeeded in reaching the New Zealand coast.
