SAFETY FROM FIRE.
AN" INDICATOR INSTALLATION'. The architect for ihe Canterbury Farmers' Co-operative Associations new buildings (Mr W. Black) is instar ling there, what promises to be a ver> valuable contrivance for the prevention of serious tires. It is called the sim-i plex lire and heat detector. Each instrument can be set to any degree of temperature, from zero to 300 degrees above. Each thermostat or dectcctor is enclosed in a strong, metal box. which is both dust and uamp proof, and the main line to which the detectors are connected by insulated wires, runs from each chamber of the warehouse to a main switchboard on the outside. On this board there are two slmtters, one called the caution shutter, the fall of which denotes a dangerous rise of temperature, and .ings an alarm bell on" the outside of the biulding, while the other is called 'he main alarm shutter on the fall of which the alarm is immediately transmitted t» the Fin> Brigade Station. On both fronts of the building an electric bell will Iv placed, and whenever the heat rises over a certain temperature an alarm ■ will be automatically given. In a window- on each, facade will It placed an I indicator board so that the firemen on ! arriving will be able to sec at a glance, the floor sind department ,n which the fire has broken out. The co-t of the' contrivance is very slight, an! it nays for itself as wherever it is installed, the Insurance CouukmiiVs giv ;• rebate of 10 per cent. <-f >he pt io-;-,. We gather thnt it will 1>- pry jbl« s\-i shopkeepers to have tho saf.rty alarm installed for about £lO. * ,
