AMUSEMENTS.

PIIINCE OF ENTERTAINERS. Charles Davenport's illuminated Dickens entertainment lias been definitely arranged for .Friday next at the Assembly Kooms, and as the hall is otherwise engaged throughout the week the stay must be for one night only. This is regreta'ole as the entertainer's work is said to be delightful in every way. Concerning his nrst appearance in Is'ew Zealand the Otago Daily Times >-ays: —"The fashionable multitude that attended, expecting to be thrilled and amuseu had everj cause for self congratulation. His story of Little Em'ly was magnificent. His interpretation of Steerforth was excellent, and the way in which he brought out that ringing sentence: "Why. Davcy, I believe you are in earnest and are good; I wish to God we all were," was something to be remembered. He again excelled in conveying to the audience the impression created on the occupants of the boathouse on Yarmouth beach by Steerforth's song. One could bear the wind creeping over the flats and round the hut, see the wrapt faces of Mr Peggotty, and Ham, and the intent, bright gaze of Little Em'ly listening like a fascinated bird. The reception of the news of Little Em'ly's flight was pourtrayed in a manner which dimmed many eyes, though the pathos had strung most of the audience to such a pitch as to render them unmindful of pocket handkerchiefs." Mr Davenport' will present here the entertainment mentioned in this criticism, and it is certain to attract a bumper house. The " illustration r ' of the different passages by means of beautiful coloured pictures is said to be very fine, and this work is supervised personally by 'Mr Herbert Wyhdham, from the Polytechnic, London. Appropriate incidental music further embellishes the performance. The box plan is now open at the Dresden, where seats may be reserved without extra fee.
