AN UNFORTUNATE LASCAR. Considerable interest was aroused on Saturday when it was known that" Dr. C. E. Thomas Mad been called on board the s.s. Clan Leslie, now in harbour, to attend to one of the Lascar crew, who was ,-:aid to he in a dying condition. Vague rumours. of fatal accidents, smallpox, plague, and'what not, flew around, but these were speedily quietened when it became known that the poor fellow was the victim of consumption, in the last .stages of which fie then lay. Dr. Thomas said that everything that could be, was being done for tlie sufferer, but that there was little chance of his'recovery, as ho was in a very bad way. A BROKEN RIB. One of the riders in- the Waimate point-to-point steeplechase on Thursday last, Mr.T. Sinclair, had the misfortune to sustain a broken rib as the result of a fall. . Mr Sinclair was riding his horse Lancer, a particularly | safe •juniper, ■■arid after negotiating most of the fences in good style, was crossed by another rider, with the result that- Lancer was brought down, giving Mr Sinclair a heavy fall. At" the time, however, lie did not notice he had hurt 'himself much, and it was not till Friday night that his'side became so inflamed that he was obliged to consult Dr. C. E. Thomas, who found out that a rib on the right side had been fractured, and proper treatment was at once applied.
