BIRTHDAY HONOURS.

XKW ZK.\LA.\I>S BHATU'L New Zealand's new Knight Sir Walter Kennaway, who is retiring from his post in. the High Commissioner's Oflice in London, was born in Devonshire, and came to Canterbury in 1853 and was concerned in the settlement of South Canterbury, being among the early runholders in the Upper Opihi basin. He was also ii partner with the late Mr E. Acton in farm lands at Pleasant Point. Whilst in the colony he devoted much of his time to public affairs; was a member of the Provincial Council, Provincial Secretary, and Commissioner of Crown Lands. He was appointed Secretary to the AgentGeneral (afterwards the High Commissioner) in 1874. . Of the three gentlemen who have l>een made members of the Imperial Service Order, Colonel Robert Collins, secretary to the New. Zealand Treasury, was born in Ireland in 1849, and entered the New Zealand Government service in iB6O. He became First Clerk of the Treasury in 1879, Clerk-in-.hm-fre 1885: Accountant 1890. and Secretarv in 1906. He entered the volunteers'in 1860, and reached his present rank in 1899.

Mr William Charles Kensington, TTndor-Secretarv for Lands, was born in North Wales in 1845, and entered the New Zealand Civil Service in 1864. He served r-s a volunteer in the East Coast campaign of 1863 and 1864. Mr James Logan, was horn in Avrshire in 1844, and entered the New Zealand telegraph service in 1864. He helped to the Dunedm-Christ-church line. He was smpointed Inspector of Telecraphs in Otago in 1865. In 1894 he became Superintendent of Lines for the whole colony.
