THE POULTRY SOCIETY.

ANNUAL SHOW. Officials—Patron, Mr A. S. Elworthy; president, Mr S. R. Burns; hen. treasurer, Mr James Thomson; hon. secretary, Mr H. Mitchell. Yesterday afternoon, for the 29th time since its inception, the South Canterbury Poultry, Pigeon and Canary Society held its annual show. The display was held, as has been the case for a number of years past, in tho commodious Drill Halt, that proved just about large enough to comfortably hold the hulk of the exhibits. The entries in point of number were not qnite so large as last year, being 582 is against 634, but it is certain that if the quantity has decreased a little, the quality of "the exhibits in all but a few instances was as good, if riot bet'ter, than has been the case before. The exhibits in the hall were neatly and handily arranged, and it'was not the fault of the management committee of the society tnat the light was so bad. At its best the interior of the Drill Hall would bis none too. bright for properly seeing the exhibits, and yesterday being a dull day .this drawhack was the more manifest. The had light was a severe handicap to the jjudges, and no doubt this was the chief cause of" the judging ending at the late hour it did, aithougn the large number of exhibits would occupy them a long time, especially considering tne ca"re with which it was carried out. There is work enough now in the show for a conple of judges for the poultry, etc., and probably it would be pleasanter for-them to work in couples and share the responsibility.. Great credit is dne to the management comr ittee and the secretary, Mr H. Mitchell, who by their well directed efforts have brought the show to -such a sue-" r-.-ssful stage after months of hard work. Mr A. S. Palmer, the judge of the poultry and canaries, had his \v<>rk cut out to get through his arduous task in good ~ time, and in spite of the experience he ha» -had in' a simil.:r capacity, yet ,he at times found it v.u-y difficult to decide to which bird the coveted red ticket was to be li.arded. SpeaKing to ;. reporter it t'te close of t.ie judging, wiu.-h ended a. >ont 4 o'el.-ct, -«ir Palmer sooke very highly of the i«.ik of the biros he had handled, ile said that i.u tile whole, SkTiti witu a Jew Licentious, notably in the Buif Orpingtons, the quality of the exhibits was very good from a breeder's ] »mc of view, and decidedly better than last year in sf.me cases which called for particular mention. There were very fair entries in both "the White Leghorn and Silver nvandotte classes, and the winning birds iu these two sections* w:>uld be very hard to beat in any show in the colony. The Minorcas were well tin to the standard usually seen in the general run of shows in Timaru, or in fact anywhere, and he believed that some of the birds had taken prizes at Dunedin and elsewhere. In this class the honours were divided between Mrs R. S. Burns and Mr Tindall, both of whom 'had exhibited splendid types of birds. There was a Rood entry in the game fowl section, bat though, the quality, of the birds shown was in some instances better than lasto year, yet certainly improvement could be expected in the duckwing and pile games, which were not quite as high-class as the black red Jitrds.- Lasngshans were fair only; Black Orpingtons were fairly numerous, and their quality was good; in fact, the winning birds in this class were very fine indeed. The Buff Orpingtons were only middling, and a lot of improvement would have to take place in this breed before the local men produced a really first-class bird. A fault seemed to be to a great extent in the colour, which was liardly true to type. .Probably the fact that- Buffs were bjightly out of fashion accounted for their "slightly poo/er class. Plymouth Rocks were very poorly represented, and this once favourite breed seemed to be going right out of favour. There were good entries in Golden Wyandottes, and the quality of the birds shown was quite a3 good as those previously shown in Timaru. White Wyandottes were popular, and all through the exhibits were quite excellent. Black Leghorns seemed very t«>pular, and large entries were forthcoming. These birds showed the most jironounced improvement of any in the show, being vastly better both in size and colour tiiau the generality of those exhibited at last year's show. Bantams were numerous, and the quality was, on +he whole, very good indeed. Air Palmer also jndged the canaries, of which tiiere were a large • number. Taking .hem all round the quality of these exhibits was good, and „j>ine "of the birds that were singled out as champions would more than liold their own in any show, and one Norwich was the best the judge had seen all the season. The bird which took the prize for the best plain head Norwich in the siiow was an exceptionally good bird, lioth in shape and colour." The pigeon section was judged by Air Thompson, who carried out his «h.ties with great success. This section of the show would have been considerably poorer than it was if it had net been for the numerous entries of the Fraser Bros., who practically swept the board in the tumbler classes, though in the other classes several other competitors entered largely and annexed their fair share of the prizes, with well-bred birds. The children were not forgotten, and a section was devoted tc their pets, the class being fairlv well filled. A fine rosella parrot took" the red ticket in this section. The rnmpetition for the best dressed doll re^ulted in numerous more or less skilful productions being entered. All were good, and the winning dolls phowed that their dressers were posfpssed of uncommon skill and taste. The- cats will not be. judged until toiay. In the evening the Garrison Band marched up to ••.he. Drill Hall, and filter playing a few selections outside the show was opened for the evening session. A good deal of interest was taken in the show by the public, and p. number slightly in excess of the

usual Friday attendance patronised it, the visitors including a very large number of outside exhibitors and country residents who had journeyed in to view the exhibits. Under the light of the powerful gas lamps the exhibits were shown to better advantage, in a great many cases, than by daylight, and for a couple of hours the interested spectators walked round the various pens, studying the inmates and making mental notes for future guidance. At about halfpast nine the members of the i( cal Society, together with visitors to the number of about eighty-five, assembled in the Arcade cafe, where an ample supper, which had been prepared >by Mr Budd, was parttkeu of. Mr S. R. Burns occupied the place of lionas chairman, and the evening concluded in a sociable manner with the proposal and responding &> various lon«ts ; The. show will be open again this afternoon" arid evening. .
