B.C. MOUNTED RIFLES

The annual dinner of the South Canterbury Mounted Rifles took place in the Crown Hotel last evening, about thirty members of the corys and a number of civilian friends and exmembers being present. The chair was taken by Captain Gressou, officer' commanding, and with ium were Captain McNab (Tiniaru Rifles), Lieutenants Smith and Miller (S.C.M.R.), and Lieutenant Bowie (unattached). After partaking of the excellent fare provided by Mr Anderson, a long toast list was honoured as follows: —Prize Donors, proposed by Lieutenant Smith, and responded to "bv Messrs Godfrey, W. .W. Wade, E. H. Reid, and Bassett. Mr Godfrey proposed The Army and Navv and Volunteers, and Lieutenant Bowie and Staff Sergeant-Major Clements resoonded. The toast of South Canterbury Mounted Rifles was proposed by Mr* Bassett, and Captain Gresson and Lieutenant Bowie responded, the latter speaker hoping that compulsory training would come. The volunteers" of to-day were doing their part, but if compulsory training came the young men who knocked about the street would have to do their share, and it was onlv right that they should do so. Lieutenant Miller proposed the toast of Kindred Corps, and Captain McNab in resnondina said that judging by the paragraph that appeared in tlie papers yesterday, re the cutting out of old officers, he was afraid he would lie one of those to go. However, he felt able to hold a rifle yet, and if the authorities did decide to enforce the rule, he would after 2/ years' training fight for his rights, and he still hoped to serve in the \ olunteers for many years to come. 1 he last toast was the Shooting Committee, proposed bv Lieutenant Smith and responded to" bv Sergeant Huidley and Corporal Dawson.
