ROLFE ASSAULT CASE.
CONSTABLES HEAVILY FIN'KD. Per Press Association. WELLINGTON. June 2. Mr Riddell, S.M., gave his decision in the case in which police constables .John E. Watson and Win. Joseph Gardiner were charged with assaulting Wm. Rolfe and his wife on the night of May H)th.
His Worship commented in strong terms on the conduct of the men, and said he had carefully considered the case .from every side, and if there was a possible chance of finding some redeeming feature in favour of defendants he .should be glad to do -so, but "he could not. Watson was fined the maximum penalty of £lO and Gardiner £5. Gardiner was convicted of assault on' Mrs Rolfe, and sentenced to 21 days' imprisonment.
