The two hotels, Star and Garter at Panmure, and St. Helier's House at St. Helier's Bay (a popular waterside resort), which'the Pamell Licensing Committee decided to-day. should be closed, both, belong to Messrs Hancock and Co St. Helier's House is worth £3OOO, and the Panmure Hotel £2OOO. WELLINGTON. June 2. A largely attended meeting of women was held in the Town Hall this afternoon to discuss the proposals for universal military training. The Mayoress (Mrs A. K. Newman) presided. The speakers included four women. The following motion was unanimously carried: "That this meeting considers, notwithstanding the enthusiasm of the volunteers, the voluntary system does not provide an adequate means of defence, therefore asks the Government to introduce a system of universal military training of young men." A committee was set up to co-operate with- the men's committee on the matter.

At the Magistrate's Court to-day, Wm. Sportes, licensee of the "White Horse Hotel, TJgahauranga, was fined £5 and costs for Sunday trading on May 23rd. William Davis, barman at the" hotel, was fined £3 and costs for selling liquor on the same date. The Licensing Bench to-day approved of all the applications for transfers and renewals. A request preferred by the recent .Chambers of Commerce Conference for a reduction in long distance telephone charges has been refused, the Superintendent of Telegraphs stating that any reduction in the present scale would result in a loss to the Department. The City Council to-night adopted the draft* Bill conferring additional powers on the Council relating to the inspection and control of the milk; supply. CHRISTCHURCH, June 2. The Harbour Board to-day granted leave to their engineer, Mr Cyrus Williams, to go to Napier to report with other engineers on an improvement of the harbour at that port. Lieutenant-Colonel Cooper, officer commanding the Lyttelton defence forces, explained to a reporter to-day some proposals lib had made in regard to the- mobilisation of the Garrison Artillery Corps at Lyttelton. It was his intention to cr-rry out a mobilisation scheme in Lyttelton next month. Witli the permission of the Harbour Board and tl«3 Mayor of the town, he intended to liavi three rockets fired off at the end of the wharves one night at a signa'i, and he hoped to be able to give"prizes to the first twenty men of the lirst corps which arrived in the drill shed, which was the alarm post in case of war.
