"With, the object of defeating the succession duties, the Conservatives on the Reichstag's finance committee coalesced with the Centre. Subsequently, after a stormy scene, •the National Liberals, Radicals arid Socialists, protesting against this inequitable attitude, withdrew. The Conservatives and Ceutre then rushed through new or increased" indirect taxes totalling £19,350,000, including duties on lighting, cooking apparatus, spirits, cosmetics, beer, tobacco, railway tickets, matches, grain, milling and export, and coal: also £3,000,000 from increased land values and land transfers. There are indications that Prince Buelow is willing to make terms with the clerics and Conservatives.
