When the first- application Tor u 11ceuse came bt'toro ill' 1 Auckland C Licensing Committee to-<lay the chairman. .Mr Ciuten, S.M., said the committee had decided to hear ail the applications lor 1 ice uses. and then decide which would be renewed. Mr O. Nicholson, solicitor for several licensees, said that meant- the calling of evidence in the case of every hotel. The practice hitherto in districts where reduction had been carried was lor the Bench to intimate the uuniber of houses it proposed to close, and also those to which it was prepared to grant renewals. .Mr Cut-ton -said the committee had the. reports of the police 011 the accommodation and conduct of the hotels. If the licensees were not prewired to accept these they could call evidence. Mr Nicholson pointed out that- one licensee, feeling sure of a renewal; might- not call evidence, and another less favourably situated might, with the result that- the latter might secure renewal.

The committee, after a great deal of discussion, decided t«» require the owners of the following hotels to bring

evidence to show cause why their licenses slioiri be renewed : —Railway Terminus, Sir Hotel (Newton), Aurora, Bricklaers' Arms, Britomarte, Fitzroy. Grosenor, King's Arms, Newton Park, Quen's Head, Suffolk and Thistle.

The commitee will meet again oil Friday to ike evidence. In the meantime the .-ommittee lias decided to hold over all applications for licenses. PvEDUCTDX IN DUNEDIN. DUNEDIN, June 1. Street to M. J. Sullivan (Mr )ngley). Duntroon Hotel, from Jam 6 S. Crowley to Michael Fitzgerald vM: Hjorring), the transferee undertaiing to do certain necessary repars. Omarama Hotel (£5) accommodation license, from Alfred M. Bloxim, to H. B. Gilmore (Mr Lucas); repairs required, the licensee agreed-to complete these being now in hand." All renewals of existing licenses rere granted. The application of J. i. Spiers (Mr Lucas) for a publican's icense at Kurow, was considered in committee and the application adioirned to June 9th, the police to'fornulate specific charges. A wholesale liceise was granted to C. H. Guthrie, Yaimate.
