NECESSARIES OF LIFE.
PLEA FOR EXPORT DUTY. MINISTER SYMPATHETIC. Press Association-By Telegraph-Copyright MELBOURNE, May 20.
A Trades Hall Council deputation asked the Minister of Customs to impose an export duty on \vßeat-, meat, and butter, so as to prevent exportation and increased prices. The deputation urged that speculators should be stopped from forcing up prices. Hie people reaped no benefit from bounteous seasons: speculators alone benefited.
The Minister in reply said he considered the Government should keep sufficient produce in the country to prevent the raising of prices. He promised to submit the matter to the Cabinet, and if an investigation showed that the producer was not getting a fair share and the "consumer was paying too much, it might help the Government to solve a knotty problem.
