Enquiries show that about 1903 several thousand discarded Martini rifles were sold by auction and purchased by a Melbourne firm, and in 1908 between 8000 and 9000 were sold to Greeners, an English linn of guumakers. The Minister of Defence was surprised on learning of this, and has now issued instructions that no arms shall be sold unless rendered absolutely useless. It has been ascertained that the Federal Government in 1905.501 d 13,000 Martini-Hc-nris to a British firm (the Greener Company), who in turn resold to reputable English firms.
