CYCLING.

JIOAD RACK AT TEMUKA

The Tcmuka Cycle Club had ideal weather for its 24-mile road race which took place yesterday, and the arrangements made for the successful running of it, reflect credit on the committee or management who worked hard and conscientiously to bring the event to a successful conclusion. The officials were: Referee and Starter, Mr T. Gunnion: Judges, Messrs W. H. Brown, W. McCallum, B. Norton, W. G. Armitage and G. Ward; Timekeepers, Messrs J. Sim, P. €oira and A. C. Watson; Secretary, Mr A. Cutlibert, and handicapper, Mr J. P. Kalaugher. The entry list was a highly satisfactory one, no fewer than twenty-six riders sending in their names; tho Fcratchings were small and at half-past 2 o'clock when the limit men were got away, twenty-one riders faced the starter. An ' considerable crowd assembled at the post office to witness the start which was effected without any mishap and a cheer was raised when the scratch man Wilson —who was giving the limit men 5 minutes—set off at a. good pace. The course was about twenty-four miles, heini from the Temuka* post office to Washdyke, back again through Temuka to Winchester and finishing at the starting point. Just about a quarter past 3 o'clock, or forty-three minutes after the scratch man had left his mark, the first bunch of returning riders put in an appearance. These were F. Tozer, Cook, E. Lee, and with a small interval between him and the. first three, came Fraser. Another'interval, and then McKnight, the Staples brothers, and Ward passed the post, with Campbell a few yards behind, another small interval and McTigue, F. Stevens, Gillespie, L. Tozer and W. Tavener hove in view and vanished in the direction of W 7 inchester. Other riders passed later, but the general opinion was that they had not much chance of annexing any of the prizes and some few of them fell out, not attempting to tackle the extra eight miles to AVinchester and back. B. Duncan was one. of these, and his retirement was to a great extent due to a fall he had sustained winch had shaken him up rather severely. About twenty minutes to four, keen eyes in the crowd discerned the returning riders and on their near approach it was seen that H. McKnight, W. Staples; W. Ward and F. Tozer led the van, these men ultimately passing the winning post in the order named, separated by only a yard or so from each other. The' prize .list and winners is as follows:
