PERSONAL ITEMS.
The newly-appointed secretary of agriculture (Mr F. S. Pope), is a native of Dunediu, and-was born in 1869. He is a son of Mr J. H. Pope, at one time a master of the Otago Boys' High School, and subsequently inspector of native schools.
During the year's absence of Colonel Davies, C.8., in England Colonel G. F. C. Campbell (Valuer-General), who is a member of the Board of Instruction, will fill the position of Inspector of the Forces.
Dr. Harold Rugg lias gone into partnership with Dr. Crawshaw. of Temuka, and the former partnership of Drs. Hayes and Crawshaw lias ' been terminated.
Dr. McArthur, S.M., has been appointed chairman of the North Island Railways Appeal Board, in succession to Mr H. Eyre Kenny, who retired on superannuation. Mr C. A. Hickson, commissioner of stamps, who is retiring on superannuation, received a presentation from members of the staff of the deoartment yesterday afternoon at Wellington. The Hon. Dr. Findlay (Minister in charge of the department), who made the presentation; spoke appreciatively of Mr Hickson's work, and of liis 44 years' connection with the service. Mr J. D. Ritchie, chief secretary for agriculture, has been appointed by the Prime Minister to represent New Zealand at the international conference of sheep breeders, to be held at Gloucester, England, next June.
Mr E. Oaradus. assistant science master at Auckland Grammar School, was yesterday appointed assistant master s»t Wellington Boys' College. Colonel Ivnidht. commanding the North Inland of the Salvation Ar*ny, left Wellington for Sydnev yesterdav. in charge of a lartre contingent of of-, fleers. They will attend the conf«" , to bo held under Commissioner McKie at Melbourne before that officer leaves to take a command in Sweden.
