His advanced age makes his condition the more serious. THE PLAGUE. 'A. woman who is suffering from plague was employed in George street west. - The Adelaide case is one of true plague. Two cases of plague are reported in Clarence street, and one case in George street. ROLLING STOCK DAMAGED. ' SYDNEY, April 9. At Newcastle, a train of ten carriages backed into a shed that was filled with carriages and did great damage to the rolling stock. No one was injured. . THE ROYAL SHOW. The weather was fine for the holiday, and the attendance at the Royal Agricultural Show totalled 71,000, the takings being £3471, against £3Oll last year. Received 4.15 p.m., April 9th. THE BANANA TRADE. MELBOURNE, April 9. A deputation waited on Mr Fisher at Cairns, and pointed out that bananagrowers had to. contend against a Victorian subsidised line bringing bananas from Fiji, to Brisbane. Mr Fisher expressed doubts whether the subsidy was constitutional. If his enquiries proved this, the subsidy would be stopped. ... GOING ON THE LAND. One of the. originators of the Association entitled "Empire Building, Limited," of London; formed for the purpose of settling emigrants in British dependencies, has arrived here with a batch of twelve agriculturists who will work together on the shares plan. COMMONWEALTH DEFENCE. . The Minister of Defence estimates that the preparatory - cost of the new military defence scheme will be £SBO-,000; the cost of the first year £1.200,000, second £1,248,000, third £1J301,000, and fourth £1,325,000. The naval scheme will cost in the first year £817,000, in the second £1,092,000, and in the third £72,000.
