WAIMATE COUNTY COUNCIL.

The monthly meeting of the Waiuiate County Council was held yesterday. Present: Messrs Rhodes (chairman), Lyall. AValker, White, Dohrniann, Bit-, chener and Milne. Apologies were made lor iUessrs Elworthv anu Jdart. ENGINEER'S REPORT. The engineer, Mr Bremner, read his monthly report on works in hand in the several ridings. In Upper Pareora Howell's road section of the metalling contract was finished, and the contractor was now at the Motukaikc end, after doing some urgent repairs at Craig--11 ion;. Fresh tenders had heeu invited for Cannington stock-bridges, altcratively for Bft. and 4ft. bridges. An estimate was given of a proposed traffic bridge and also a profile of the Pareora river bed on Jefcoate's crossing of the Southburn load. Copies of this information were supplied to the Levels County Council, with the names of those on both sides of the river who advocated the proposal by petition to this Council. (The Council held this over for a month, a committee to moot the Levels Council). In Otaio riding the work required on Robb's bush road would be attended to. Eeport was made on the work applied for by Mr Martin on Grange Farm road, and the Council agreed that it be done. It was also agreed to do some metalling asked for by Mr Medlicott and others in Mills Settlement, (Makikihi riding). An estimate was given for metalling work asked for bv Mr Whitney and others, oiid the Council decided to hold it over for a report on Hertslett's road. An estimate being given, the Council agreed to safeguard a. sharp turn opposite Mr J. Hunt's. North road (Deep Creek riding"). Gootl progress had been made with the widening of Hakaterainea Gorge road, and it should be finished this week. Progress with the bridge at the Hatcheries was delayed by non-arrival of material. The Council's team had attended to several jobs in this riding. On the engineer's report thereon, the Council agreed to spend £BB on metalling asked for by Mr H. Corbett, on Stoney-Creek road. The riding members were requested to inspect and report on a deviation asked for on Mr J. Black's zigzag road. Plan, report and estimate were submitted regarding a suggested deviation -of paiji of Black Spur road, and making a liglro dray road throughout. This was held over till next meeting. Tenders were ordered to he called for alterations to the Council Chamber to close on the 14th inst., Councillor Walker and the engineer to open and accept one. The committee appointed had agreed to purchase a section adjoining the pound site at St. Andrews, taking possession on Ist May. Two persons had failed to comply with gorse notices, and proceedings were ordered to be taken. Orders were issued in throe other cases. Messrs Walker aiuL Dohrniauii reported having seen Mr J. CORRESPONDENCE. Among the correspondence was the following: — From the Union S.S. Co., and Sir J. Ward, thanking the Council lor its expression of sympathy re wreck of s.s. Penguin. From the S.C. Automobile Club, re protest against the Government proposals re allocating numbers of' cars, etc. The Receiver of Land Revenue sent statement of accrued thirds and fourths. From the Lands Office re proposo-l access to run 44 Blueelifrs. The Board did not consider it necessary to survey at present; in any case there were no funds available for the work. From Mr E. stating that in the absence of the petition itsell, tliey were unable to discuss the proposed tralhc bridge at the Soutnburn crossing of the i/areora. Froin Mr J. IvirK, complaining of overhanging fence and trees in .butcher's laue. —Engineer to see the owner and have matter attended to. From Mr J.' Micks, re alleged nuisance in Cardiff street, and re water in well on Timaru road, of which lie had forwarded a sample for inspection. This water he reported unfit for use.; — Engineer to put in a few barrowfuls of earth in hollows at Cardiff street. , MISCELLANEOUS. The three load rangers reported having impouuded or "released" 30'J head of stock. Applications for the position of rangers, dog tax collectors, and sanitary inspectors in various ridings were considered, and the following applicants were appointed:' Deep Creek and Makikihi ridings, J. Micks; Upper and Lower Pareora, D. Campbell; Hakateramea, F. J. Harris. Mr Walker reported re the roller which the Council had for sale that there were several enquiries and it was decided to call for tenders. The County Solicitor conferred with the Council re their position in the Conciliation Board's dealing with the. claim of the General Labourer's Union, and the chairman and engineer were, appointed to appear on behalf of the Council at Timaru next clay. A DANGEROUS CREEK. The Couucil carried the following resolution in connection with Tuesday's fatality. —"That the Council learns with regret of the drowning fatality at Hertslett's Creek, which occurred in Yesterday's storm by which a son of Mr and' Mrs Ryder lost his life, and tenders its pympathy with the family in their bereavement, and that a copy of the resolution be sent to Mrs Ryder." The engineer was directed to prepare an estimate for next "leeti'if ot the cost of a suitable traffic bridge at Hertslett's Creek crossing of the Hook road; also cost of any other description of work he would suggest for rendering this place more secure in flood season, and that in the meantime the tenders invited for lowering the cutting be. held in abeyance and deposit cheques returned to tenderers.
