THE MAYORALTY.

To the .Editor of the " Timaru Herald." Sir, —The time is drawing near when it will be necessary to nominate someone for the position of Mayor for the borough of Timaru, and I quite agree with " Ratepayer No. 2" in this morning's issue. I think it would be a calamity to the town if we lost the services of Mr Craigie at the present juncture, especially considering lie has been the promoter of so many_ important works which are occupying the attention of the Borough Council now, and for some time to come. Under the new system of election the wJiole personnel of the Council may be altered, and I do not think it would be beneficial to the town to lose the valuable experience of the present Mayor, who has the whole working of the system at his finger-ends, both from a financial and practical point of view. And I do not see that his Parliamentary duties would in any way interfere with his duties as Mayor, as at tlie most he would only be in Wellington about four months in the year, and could easily be in Timaru every fourth week, or more often if necessity warranted, and would always be. in close proximity if anything important should crop up. So with the aid of a good Deputy-Mayor business could be carried on with, satisfaction. Further, I do. not think that any borough in the Dominion has had a Mayor who has carried out his duties with- a clearer • judgment, and a higher dignity, both to himself and the electors, than Mr Craigie has done during his long term as chief citizen of our town. So, hoping that a number of influential citizens will immediately approach Mr Craigie and try to persuade him to allow himself to be nominated for a farther term of office.—l am, etc., WORKING MAN. Timaru, March 30th, 1909.
