MR HISLOP DECLINES. Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, March 6. : The Mayor (the Hon. T. W. Hisk .) this afternoon sent the following let! r' to Mr A. A. George, in response the request that he (Mr Hislop) slioi,. J allow himself to be nominated for I .? Mayoralty for another term:—"l e magnificent requisition presented l,v you to me, the kind remarks mat.! l/.v yourself and echoed by those present on Thursday, and the efforts made by you and other friends on my belialt, make it very difficult for me to refuse to accede • to the requests made to me that I should again become a candidate for the Mayoralty. I have carefully considered the public needs and the sacrifices entailed upon others by my 'holding office,, and I have made up my mind that I must refuse. In your interview with him Mr Brandon put forward into prominence the wearing effect and the loss entailed upon myself, but I must recognise the sacrifices made by my partners, and that they should only be continued if there was a public necessity. My duties until quite lately have also been made greatly easier by Mrs Hislop, and 1 regret to have to say that her medical advisers insist that she nuist for a time have rest. I greatly regret that I must refrain from gratifying my own as well as your wishes. 1 again thank you and all my friends for their con-, siderate kindness and confidence." |
