SWIMMING.

MEETING *H WAIMATE. ' e . The Waimate swimming carnival was held yesterday in glorious weather, and 'before a good attendance of enthusiasts, over £ls being taken at the gates. The general supervisor was Mr u\ A. Margan; referee, Mr A. G. Sanderson ; and starter, Mr W. W. Jordon. This was the first carnival held at Waimate under the auspices of the South Canterbury Centre, and it was highly successful. The greatest interest was taken in all the events, and the local swimmers rolled up well. Themanagement was highly creditable, and Waimate is to be congratulated on £-he success of their initial meeting. The handicapping was good, and produced close finishes. The Timaru contingent won most of the open events. The Waimate Brass Band was present ■ and .played several selections. The following are the results : 50 Yards Handicap—Sinclair, 1, Rollinson 2, Robertson 3. Won by a touch. Time, 39sec. 100 Yards —Robertson 1, Sanderson 2, Sinclair-3. This was another very fine race, all being close together at the finish. 50 Yards Breast Stroke —Cowan 1, Rollinson 2, G. S. Jones 3. The contest was excellent, and win popular. Springboard Diving—H. Rollinson 1, F. Harold 2. A splendidly contested competition. Final of School Boys' Race, 25 yards—Cochrane (scr) 1, Richards (3 sec) 2. The boys took quite as keen an interest in the sport as their elders did, and the race for them excited great interest and enthusiasm. 'SO Yards (Youths)—Cochrane 1, Smith 2. Won easily. Plate Diving, local —Bennett brought up 21 out of 24 plates. The water was beautifully clear, and each competitor could be seen gathering in his spoil. Musical buoys—Pearson 1, Cairns 2. Cigar and Umbrella —Sanderson 1. Rescue Exhibition —An exhibition was given by four Waimate men. Thanks were accorded to all who had assisted in making the sports a success, and especially to the competitors from Timaru, for whom cheers were given. The T.R.C.
