EXPLOSION OF DYNAMITE. . LOSS OF LIFE.

An explosion of dynamite took place in a new building in Wickham street. V A man named Russell was killed, and several other passers-by were severely injured. Valuable plate glass shop fronts were shattered. Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, Jan. 22. The fifteen-years-old son of Mr Anderson, a settler at, Whitford, near Howick, was kicked by a horse yesterday and fatally injured.

A single man, about 45 years of age,, named William James Green, was yesterday afternoon drowned in the Waimate Public Baths. Deceased dived in from the deep end and was seen to be in trouble on coming up. One of the two present ran for assistance and Mr Bennet came and dived in. After some trouble he found the deceased and with assistance he was got out. Drs. Hayes and Pitts applied the usual measures for resuscitation without avail. The accident caused quite a gloom in Waimate. The unfortunate man, who was deaf and dumb, always had a smile and recognition for anyone he met. He had only one relation, a sister resident in the North Island. The lsody was removed to the morgue, where an inquest will probably be held to-day.
