Germany's special trade in "1908, inclusive of precious metals, shows that imports were valued at £435,000,000, compared with £450,000,000 in 1907. The exports were-valued at £340,000,000, compared with £355,000,000.

CHRISTCHURCH, Jan. 22. A small amount:o'f business has been done in new barley and oats but is'at all keen to buy. The barley that is being offered is, more or less discoloured and has been sold at 3s bd to ds 9d. One line is said to have been purchased at 3s 9d, But this was an outside price for an early sample. Maltsters are holding off for the present as fairly large stocks : of' barley were carried over and there is a" larger crop than last vear. It is reported that Blenheim barley has been offered at 4s but without finding buyers. _., . '• One or two transactions in oats are reported and the samples being early cut "are onthe light side, though better filled than last year's grain. A line of 1500 bushels of duns and gartons has been taken at Is 3dj the duns being slightlv "discoloured but the gartons we're "fairly bright, though' of mixed quality. " ' '. . . ■ A fair amount of ryegrass seed is offering but the samples show signs of weather and are generally light and not very clean. Some business has been done at Is 6d for the better samples,.'but few settlers are willing to accept tins figure.

The second "wool sale of the season will be held on Monday, when 20,377 bales, or 2604 bales more than at the sale in January, 1908, will be offered.

There is; a fair demand for Australian lamb; good ayer : age .quality crossbred heavy 3}d, light ifd; prime Australian mutton heavy 2£d, light 3d.
