FEARFUL LOSS OF LIFE. IJresS -Association-By Telegraph-CopyrigtU VIENNA, Jan. 15. An explosion of firedamp in the Auka colliery, Veszprem, Hungary, killed 56 men out of 200. EXPLOSION OF GELATINE. SIX COLOURED MEN KILLED. Received 4.30 p.m., January 17th. JOHANNESBURG, Jan. 17. Chinamen, for a motivo , unknown, ignited a quantity of gelatine in the village of Deep Mine, Johannesburg. The resultant explosion killed six coloured labourers, and injured nine whites and fifteen coloured. Per Press Association. CHRISTCHURCH, Jan. 10. Nothing further has transpired regarding tho disappearance of tho woman, Mary Donovan, from the steamer Mokoia during- the. passage from Wellington to Lyttelton last week. It has been ascertained, however, that after being' spoken to by one of the stewards shortly before midnight on the Bth inst.the woman'went to her cabin; she removed -her hat, and then told tho other passenger occupying ' the • same .cabin- that. it was toO stuffy and that she would go on dock. The Mokoia is expected, to arrive at Auckland to-morrow when the police authorities in that city will make further enquiries. DUNEDIN, Jan. I' 7. A drowning accident occurred _at Brighton this morning, the victim being William Jeffs, aged 19 years. Deceased and.three companions named Alfred Clark, John Griffiths and .Herbert Perry were bathing at the usual place. Jeft's swam out some distance by himself and found the current too strong to allow him to got back. When it was seen he was in trouble Perry swam to his assistance' <jnd Jeft's said : —"Try- to save mo, Herbert." Perry got hold of deceased three times, but ° the current was so strong • that he had to let go. Perry just managed to reach shore in an exhausted condition. There is a rock about 20 yards from the scene of tho accident, but it was impossible to reach it. The body has not been recovered. Deceased was a son of Mr James Jeffs, livery stable _ proprietor, and well-known in.racing circles.
