BERLIN, Jan. 15. > Fra-ulein Petersen, a governess in a German naval family,. and an accomplice of a man named Dietrich, has been sentenced to four years' imprisonment for treason at Leipzig. It is supposed that she was in the service of France. pietrich was sentenced to five years' imprisonment on a charge of plotting to reveal to France the secret of German smokeless powder.

RIOTS AT RIO JANEIRO

Demonstrations against the ( ' Light and Power Company at Rio Janeiro developed into riots against the violent police methods of quelling the disturbances. The riots lasted three nights, and many were killed; and injured.

Prince Ito, in., a striking speech at Taiku, strenuously combated the idea that . Japan was aimiijg at the overthrow of Korea. Ho declared that the relations between the Sovereigns of Japan and Korea were mutual and fraternal. He would be grieved if friction arose between the two peoples.

REORG A NISING MILITARY. rCONSTANTINOPLE, Jan.. 15. The Porto proposes to employ British, French and Italian gendarmerie officers in Macedonia, in reorganising the gendarmerie of other vilayets.

SENTENCES ON LYNCHERS. CONSTANTINOPLE, Jan. 16. v The criminal court at Constantinople imposed sentences varying from five to fifteen years upon the authors of the lynching of Ottoman, Greek and Turkish women early in October.
