James Sharp, Traveller for Irvine and ' Stevenson, •Dnncdin. wrs charged with taking an order for two bottle.? of whisky from n resident of Owaka in a no-liceuse district, .'along with a grocery, order. He was convicted and fined £lO. with costs £2 9b.
On a second information. Sharp was convicted and ordered to Come up for sentence, when called upon.
The Magistrate that he did not. wish to sftnd the young fellow to gaol, hut the penalty was imprisonment for a second conviction.
Counsel fur the defence said thai defendant had lout his j»l>, uml h:ul received no profit from th* liquor transactions. 'Briggs lives., of (he Standard brewery. Caw-n>ham, were chni'fritl with celling liquor to a resident oi ltaleluiha in a noliien.se district, and failing to send notice to ths clerk of the court within a reasonable tint'*. Tli<' evidence; showed that 17 days had elapr-cd before a notice was received by the clerk of the court. Defendants were fined 2C<~ and cosie.
