The " Times," in an, article dealing with Lord Norihcote's farewell, as GovernorGentral of Australia, refers to the high tributes paid to him and his successor. Reverting to the question of immigration, it urges the Slates forthwith to make a virtue of impending necessity- It adds that, as the main power of the purse will shortly devolve upon the Commonwealth, the States might save much overlapping effort, and expenditure. If. considers it more than time the High Commissioner was appointed. QUEENSLAND S'iJc.AM SERVICE. LONDON, September 10. Mr Kidston, Prem'er of Queensland, has sailed' homewards. He has completed arrangements with the British India Steamship Company for a sieamship service between London and Torres Straits. The company will receive a subsidy of £37,000 per annum, and will 'provide a 35 days' service between London and Thursday Island. The eteamers will Tun monthly, commencing : n October, and call at Cairns, Townsvilie, Port Aiwa, and any other port which offers 150 tons of cargo, returning via i3>e, Cape. Uniform freight rates will be charged from all Queensland ports. The steamers-engaged in the service, will be of 5500 tone regisieer. AUSTRALIA'S WHITE POLICY. Received 9.25 September 11th. LONDON, Sept. 11. Commenting npon a cable message published in the " Times," stating that the la** conference of State Premiere had decided to hamper and resist the Federal Government's encouragement of immigration, the "Westminster Gazette" says that the success of a white policy depends upon whether sufficient numbers are attracted to justify the exclusion of the nonwhites.
