DENMARK'S ZONE SYSTEM,
lira letter to tlie Auckland "Herald" Mr Samuel Vaile publishes some information he has received from the Minister of Public Works for Denmark, regarding the results of the; introduction of'..• the " zone "' 'system of -.charging railway fares on. the State raifp-ays: in that eoubfcry. In reply to Mr Vaile's inquiry the Minister states that since 1897 the fares have been fixed at per .kilometre, \for the, first 10D kilometres (62J;miles), ■ and! thereafter "zone" (or "stage*;") , fates come ;;:iuto force. ;. • The first is 10, the second 11,. the third 12 'kilometres, and thereafter the successive zones increase by two kilometres (about li miles) to the 17th, so that this' 17th covers 40 kilometres (nearly 25 miles); and covers distances from 310 to 333 miles. All dfctaiices beyond this form the 18th zone. From tables sent linn Mr "Vaile gives the following as some of the zone fares, for the three classes:^—
The latter fare cover's all longer distances. There are about 2000 miles of railway open, of. which 1200 belong to Hie State. The zone system is also applied to the carriage of goods. ■ but Mr "Vaile says in his-letter 1 hat he cannot from the information •supplied quote the rotes. : The Danes, have, however, only six classes of: goods: • . *'
