TIMARU MAIN SCHOOL.

The monthly meeting of the Timarn Main School Committee was held last evening. Present : Be v. A. L. Hunt (chairman), Messrs Vogeler, Stead, McCahon, Wilson, Radclitle, Robertson and Burmester. Apology was made for Rev. Mr Olphert. Th« chairman read some correspondence. Two letters were received from the Health Department acknowledging receipt of the committee's letter recommending the adoption of tho Waimate County Council's suggestion that all cases of infectious disease occurring in a school district should be reported to the head t-eacher, and that other members of the family b=noc allowed to attend school. Dr r inch had been communicated with and would be glad to assist. The Hon. >V. Hall-Jones wTote that he had received the committee's request for 50 forest trees from the State nuiseiy, and bad passed it on to the Minister for Lands with a request lor tavouiable consideration.

On this subject Mr Vogeler said he had communicated with Mr Montgomery, o! Geraldine, . and the headmaster of Scotsburn about native tretu, and the funnel had promised his assistance. Mr Wilson remarked that- the trees already planted looked rather sickly, and i: was suggested that they needed a bit of forking about them, and that the gardening might do that. I'he Waimatauai Committee wrote -that they had fixed September 11th to 2tJth September for the next term holidays, and they hoped that these dates would .suit the other town schools. —The chairman said that he had seen Mr Dalgliah and Mr Valentine about, -it, and ihey both desired to have the holiday earlier so aa to have as long a time as possible between the holiday and the examination in .November.—The committee resolved that the term holiday be from August 28th to- September l4th, and, it was remarked that it would not signify if WaimaCaitai for reasons suggested had 'their holiday at a different time.

The chairman stated that the headnhister and Mr Collins had been appointed trustees for the school savings bank account. He made an explanation regarding the great amount of work required to make out the proper amount *«£ interest to. be allowed to each, and recommended tlhafc some accountant be employed to work out these amounts.— This matter was left in the hands of the chairman and headmaster. »

. The headmaster, Mr G. Dalglish, reported that the attendance had been much affected during the past month, by bad weather. ' 'lbe average for live weeks had been 662.8, 691.4, 662.8, 696.4, and 710.2. It had again leached the usual average,-the present week being well over 720. Tlks roll number was 801. .Xo further cases of scarlet fever had develop d amongst the scholars, and thfiee previously reported had ail recovered and were attending school. The new ar-raDgem-ut regarding the 6chool bank had brew carried out. About 80 new books had bten obtained for the school library, and two sets of story books for the lower c.wses. The total ccst was about £5. Most of' the teachers' chaiis were worn out. and beyond repair; the Board should be asked to supply new ones (nine). Ihe <i posits in tliv savings bank for the p.st five weeks were £8 7s 7d, withdrawals £lO 17s 7d.

Mr Buruiester, as one of the visitors, paid that more than nine thiir.s were reeded, and on his report the Committee decided to ask the Board to >uppiy a baker's dozen.

The former had been dealt with; the asphalte needed repairs.—The janitor to procure some material for patching asphalte. The Education Bill and the proposed Barclay memorial scholarship were ■dealt with.

Accounts amounting to £27 17s 4d were passed for payment-. The treasurer reported 'that he had only £8 15s in band, of which £6 Cs 8d belonged to a concert fund; but incidentals £24 were about due.
