CORRESPONDENCE.

CAROLINE BAY

To the':Editor 'of the "Timaru Herald. Sir,—Allow me to protest- against the absurd -decision of the majority -of the. Borough Council, compelling -the closing of, the tea rooms on' Caroline Ray during'the whole of Sunday. The terms of occupation . compel 'the lessee -to supply refreshments on demand .on other ;days, yet on this day, just, when most required, the lessee is not even to be allowed- to feed the hungry, or . give 'j drink to these. ■■ who, are athirst. Are people not supposed to require food or drink, at Timaru on Sundays? There can be no question that'the majority, of the Council, oh; .this occasion were influenced by that narrow Sabba t ' tarianism, which happily is" now being relegated to the social scrap heap, .and they.; have written ! themselves.'• down as, back numbers fit only. for. the' paper basket. Not one cdmthohsense argument can they advance for closing the tea rooms at the very .time that -they .are most re-: quired. In order to bring them to their senses rival establishments should be. induced to cater for the. wants .of Sunday visitors on the Bay. .' Al fresco entertainment would be appreciated, arid . the enterprising individual who supplied the demands, would reap a rich;reward; should the public suffer inconvenience on account' of the bigotry of a few councillors? These will hot.be,compelled to partake of the refreshments, provided if they do not wish to do:so.—l am, etc., ... M.ALEXANDER.
