ATHLETICS
SOUTH CANTERBURY HARRIERS,
The South Canterbury Harriers were yesterday the guest* of Mr K Holdgate, and ran irom his son's residence, North street. The weather was beautifully fine, in facfa a. trifle too warm. The attendance was not quite up to the standard, other engagements being in a measure accountable tor this. The paper was again dispensed with, the skipper selecting tthe course as lie Mint aioug. The lucent mills made the going extremely heavy, in some places it being nothing more than a bog. From Rhodes street, through bye roads, the pack bustled along in the- vicinity of Saltwater Creek bin, a turn from here led to the Fairview road. Some-particularly heavy ploughed laud and creeks materially affected the whiie costumes of the runners, not a few being down oh all Touts on variousuocasious. from Lundsburough road a line was made for North strtei- and home was reached with a spirited"'burst'of speed, Clanghton, Glue and Geaney well to the lore. A muck-needed wash was the next iiTOsti important, move after winch le- • freshing afternoon tea was dispensed by Mrs J. Holdgate and the Misses Holdgate. This proved very acceptable and Mr Ayleu returned thanks on his clubmates behalf. Mr Holdgalie in reply acknowledged the compliment and wished the. Hat nets continued success. Three hearty cheers were given and a pleasant afternoon's sport was brought to a close. The SU Mary's Young Men's Society have extended an invitation to the club on Monday''.evening next'27th inst 1 . to a lecture at their rooms on "Side Lights on Quackery."
