NEW YORK, July 17. A Customs officer at Boston was trying to open with an axe a box of detonating caps landed fromi the Hamburg-American liner Betliania, when an explosion killed him. An inspector and a warehouseman were injured, as well as several bystanders. . MURDER, AND SUICIDE. Per 'Press Association. TE AWAMUTU, July 18. On Friday a tragedy occurred at Maungatautari, ten miles beyond Kihikihi, when Frank Mason, of Mason Bros., runholder, shot his infant son and himsself. Constake Lander went to Maungataiitari immediately on receipt of the news, and returned late this evening. On entering Mason's honsa a, ghastly spectacle met his eyes. The little baby boy, an only child, aged ten months, lay in the centre of the floor with his head shattered by a gunshot wound, whilst the father's body lay beside the door with a bullet wound just "below the left ear.v. Mason had been in New Zealand about three years. His wife was in the house when the shooting took place, and naturally suffered terribly.
