- THE BUDGET STATEMENT.

CAPETOWN, July 1. ,Mr Merriman, in introducing the Budget ii the Cape Parliament, (showed that the deficiency for the past year was £996|000. The Government's retrenchments had led to a saving of £617,000. He anticipated a deficiency of £906,760. It wis proposed to lower the base of the income tax to £SO per annum; to suspend tbe sinking fund provision, and to deduct 5 per cent, from the salaries of civil servant! and members of parliament. x He added that ihe Government did-trfot want the Cape to enter" into closer union with the other colonies as a bankrupt state.
