Mr Kendall, stationinasler at Bray brook, in his evidence said he intended to give the signal " Come to the distance" to the Bendigo train, but according to the entry in his'hook he gave "Line clear to Sydenham." The mistake he made was m not keeping the Ballarat train -at the home signal when he gave line clear, butile was under the impression that he had •riven the signal to the Bendigo train "Come to the distance." He had been working for ten hours on the day ot the accident, but that was nothing unusual. He had to look after both signals and the platform. Another witness said thai he saw sparks fly from the brakes of the Bendigo train. At the home signal it slowed rapidly, and with 30 yards moie of clear road there would have been no accident.
