LANDS DEPARTMENT,

WELLINGTON, May 13. The following promotions have been made- in the Lands and Survey Department consequent on recent retirements from the service:—Mr J. W. Davis, land transfer draughtsman and surveyor, Auckland, to be chief draughtsman in the district lands office, Wellington, vice Mr Llewllyn .Smith, retired; Mr G. H. McClure, district surveyor, Timaru. to be chief draughtsman at Christchurch, vice Mr C. B. Shanks, retired; 'Mr J. It. Waile, assistant lands transfer draughtsman and surveyor, Auckland, to be land transfer draughtsman in the same office in succession to Mr J. W. Davis (transferred) owing to the retirement of Mr G. A. Ileade, receiver of land revenue at Dunedin. Mr H. L. Welch, of the Invercargill office was promoted to Dunedin, but the ill-health of his- wife necessitated Mr Welch's refusal of the transfer. This vacancy has, therefore, yet to be filled. The successors to rangers McKenzie (Queenstown( and Campbell (Invercargill) who have retired, are still to be appointed.
