SOCIAL GATHERING.

PRESENTATION TO MR AND MRS :;J/..BO_RRi.K ..•■ '-.., There was a large, gathering of residents of Hazelbum • and 'surrounding country' on Thursday evening when a 'social and presentation was tendered to Mr and Mrs J. Borrie, who alter "residing; tor seven years in that part, are leaving the district to ? take up'.', a f aim. .at Stujholme The social .was held.in the schoolroom and during an inter-, val in the dancing, Mr M. O'Connor, who acted as chairman, briefly explained .tiie object of. the gathering. Mr O'Connor 1 , said that, when ;the idea of giving Mr Borrie : a farewell •was first mooted there was a very ready response, every settler in the.district coming forward with contributions! and: add- - ing expressions of good fellowship to their departing guest. He then called upon Mr F. Dickson to make the presentation. This lie! did in a happy and humorous way and asked their guest to accept a handsome gold watch and Mrs Borrie. a massive gold curb bangle. . Messrs 0. Blackler and .1. T. Smart also voiced the sentiments axpressed by the chairman and "concluded by wishing both Mr and Mrs Borrie'every success in their new sphere of life. Mr FShiers spoke of Mr Borrie from a sixntsman's point of 'view more than as one connected with public matters.' Mr Borrie, who was visibly affected, made a reply appropriate to the occasion, and said he fe'fc. greatly indebted , ; to,tliein for their kindness. He had always endeavoured to do what was just and right but he had done it with the. expectation of reward and he honed that if at any time any of them were down, afc Studhohne Junction they would call and see .him. Ringing cheers were then given for both Mr and Mrs' Borrie. Dancing was then resumed and kept up until 4 a.m. First-class music was supplied by Messrs A. Muir ,J. Camphell, and F. Shiers, jmd Mr J: Nnughton made an efficient M.C. There was an abundance of refreshments which were supplied by the ladies of the district. Credit is dv» to Mrs and Miss Mesdames O'Connor. Miller, and Henderson for the tasteful manner in which the school was decorated and also for their untiring efforts to make everything pleasant for the visitors.
